Anxiety and Depression

Anxiety and Depression

In our fast-paced, technology-driven world, anyone can succumb to anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges. Research shows that 1 in 5 Canadians experience a mental illness. By the age of 40, 1 in 2 Canadians will have or have had a mental health condition. Anxiety and depression are among the most common, affecting people from all backgrounds. However, for individuals from Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC) communities, these struggles are often more complex.

Stemming from cultural expectations, intergenerational trauma, immigration, racial discrimination, and more, the need for mental health support is great. However, the stigma surrounding mental health can present a significant barrier to seeking help. At Shanti Psychotherapy, we understand that therapy is not one-size-fits-all. Culturally relevant care is essential in a multicultural society. We offer inclusive, affirming, and tailored support to your lived experiences.

Therapy is a proven method to cope with anxiety, depression, and a wide variety of other mental health issues. If you are feeling anxious, sad, overwhelmed, or stuck in life, therapy can help. We offer a safe place to explore your emotions and understand what you are going through. With therapy, we can help you bring positive changes to your life.

Anxiety

Anxiety can take many forms, including generalized anxiety, social anxiety, panic attacks, and phobias. All of these impact brain function and increase cortisol, the stress hormone that heightens alertness and tension. This can cause symptoms such as restlessness, racing thoughts, difficulty concentrating, and physical discomfort, such as headaches or stomach pain. Some cultures are more vulnerable to anxiety from systemic stressors, intergenerational trauma, and cultural expectations. For them, addressing anxiety is an essential element for dealing with their lived experiences and identity.

Depression

Depression can manifest in different ways, including major depressive disorder and persistent depressive disorder. You can also have situational depression from grief or crisis, and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). All of these alter neurotransmitter levels in your brain, which affect your mood, energy, and motivation. Increased stress hormones, such as cortisol, contribute to fatigue, feelings of hopelessness, and difficulty concentrating. You can also experience physical symptoms, such as changes in appetite or sleep patterns.

Just like anxiety, people from some cultures are more vulnerable to depression. Systemic barriers, intergenerational trauma, and societal pressures can discourage them from seeking mental health support. However, culturally responsive care can offer you a practical pathway to healing and recovery.

Other Common Mental Health Disorders

While anxiety and depression are the most common, many other disorders can impact brain function, emotional regulation and overall well-being. They range from everyday stress and burnout to more severe conditions like panic attacks, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Conditions like obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and PTSD can lead to intrusive thoughts and heightened stress responses. They can make you feel unsafe and out of control.

All these conditions are treatable. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness or cause for shame. Instead, it is a sign that you care for yourself and want to make concrete changes to improve your life and relationships. This is a highly courageous and impactful stance.

What You Can Expect in Therapy for Anxiety, Depression, and Mental Health Disorders

Therapy is not about fixing you, because you are not broken! Many factors, including life transitions, stress, trauma, relationships, and cultural experiences, influence your mental health. We provide a safe, non-judgmental place for you to express yourself and receive support attuned to your background and values. You will receive insight into how your experiences have shaped you. We will help you process your emotions and teach you techniques to cope and heal. We always work at your pace, ensuring that therapy is respectful and relevant to your culture and unique life experiences.

How We Can Support You

Our compassionate therapists offer a range of evidence-based therapeutic approaches to support you. We work with what works best for you. We have experience with Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), mindfulness, emotion-focused therapy, EMDR, hypnotherapy, and culturally responsive care. Our approach goes beyond symptom management. We address the root causes of distress and help take control of your life, build resilience and gain hope.

Mental health healing requires both individual work and community connection. Many BIPOC individuals experience intergenerational trauma, community-based stress and expectations that impact their mental health. We consider these cultural factors to help you navigate family dynamics, self-identity, and societal expectations. We honour your heritage while prioritizing your well-being.

Research shows that evidence-based therapy can be highly effective in improving mental health. With the proper support and tools, you can quickly forge positive changes in your life. We invite you to book a 20-minute no-charge consultation to discuss your concerns and explore how therapy can support you.

Sitting with feelings, especially difficult ones, is a hard but important skill. Tolerating and soothing difficult feelings until they pass is an important skill that for most people is not taught or modeled well in our society that tends to avoid intense feelings. 💪🏽This ability bolsters our other skills of practicing grace, processing our emotions and allowing ourselves to move forwards towards the goals and life we want to curate. It’s important to explore and be curious about the emotions we are experiencing, to recognize what they are, to allow yourself to feel them. All emotions can be observed and supported with compassion until the feelings lesson.✨#emotionfocusedtherapy #therapytoronto #therapiststoronto #southasiantherapist #
