What is Hypnotherapy and How Can it Help Me?

Hypnotherapy is described as a state of focused concentration. But, what does this mean? Many people who’ve experienced hypnotherapy say it feels like a wonderful relaxed state, where the outside world doesn’t matter. Similar to that feeling just before falling asleep. What you might find surprising is that most of us are in and out of a hypnotic state multiple times a day. If you ever find yourself lost in a good book or show, or if you describe yourself as “in the zone” where you are so engrossed in what you’re doing, time seems to go by without your paying attention to it. A very common experience is if you’re driving a familiar route and you get to your destination, not noticing that you’ve passed certain landmarks. This is hypnosis!!

More importantly though, is how it can help you. Hypnotherapy helps by directly connecting with the subconscious mind, where many of our limiting beliefs, habits and patterns of thought are stored. By relaxing the mind and body we can allow the conscious mind to take a break, and work with the subconscious mind to help release beliefs and habits that no longer serve us.

The list of what hypnotherapy can help with is endless, but here are a few common examples:

  • Anxious thoughts

  • Low mood

  • Sleep and relaxation

  • Habit change

  • Procrastination and Motivation

  • Fears

  • Grief and loss

  • Build confidence

  • Pain management

  • Release anger

And don’t worry! I will not ask you to cluck like a chicken! Hypnosis cannot make anyone do anything they don’t want to do, or anything that goes against their morals. You are always the one in complete control during a session. The only reason someone might cluck like a chicken, is because they’ve chosen to, and have VOLUNTEERED to be part of an entertaining stage hypnosis show. The clinical hypnotherapy I offer at Shanti Psychotherapy is woven into your treatment plan, as a wonderful tool to help you reach your goals.

Please feel free to book a complimentary 15 minute consultation with me if you have questions about how hypnotherapy can help you!

NGH Certified Hypnotherapist, Mongan Method Certified Hypnobirthing Childbirth Educator

Hello, my name is Rashmi Kumar. I am a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), an NGH Certified Hypnotherapist as well as a Mongan Method Certified Hypnobirthing Childbirth Educator. When I was a young girl, my Dad brought home a book about a prominent psychiatrist who used hypnosis to help his patients. This book fueled my passion for hypnosis and helped me realize my path in life is one where I can help people heal. Hypnosis led me to psychotherapy, as I wanted to be able to dive deeper with my clients, and have more tools at my disposal to help them.

As a first generation Canadian, growing up in the Niagara area, to parents who immigrated from India, I am able to empathize with the distinct challenges the South Asian community faces. Not least of which is struggling to find one’s place. Balancing the unique expectations of family and cultural values, with the society in which we live.

Something that helped me immensely, as a confused kid who wanted desperately to fitin, was talking to others who shared my experience. Understanding that I wasn’t alone in what I was feeling and there are others out there who can understand and empathize.

This is what I will strive to incorporate into our time together at Shanti Psychotherapy. An empathetic, compassionate approach that respects you, your lived experience and will meet you where you are. Working with you, towards your healing, in a way that fits with your life.

I utilize a person centered approach, bringing in tools from cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), integrative trauma and attachment model (ITATM), emotional freedom therapy (EFT) as well as hypnotherapy.

I look forward to working with you!
