A diagnosis of cancer can turn your world upside down, whether physically, emotionally, socially or spiritually. As soon as the word cancer is mentioned all kinds of thoughts start to run in one’s mind. Am I going to be okay? Is death imminent? What will happen to my plans that I had for my life? All of these are valid and important questions to ask.
This diagnosis does not only affect the person having the cancer but it affects their whole family and social construct. A lot of times well meaning family and friends do not want to discuss this subject for various reasons. This can leave the person very isolated and alone in dealing with their disease.
Studies show patients with cancer are affected with anxiety and depression twice as much as the general population.
Grief is also a common visitor with these patients as they grapple with loss of how life used to be before cancer. Some treatments can affect body image and this can affect self-esteem.
Cancer can also spur the deeper questions such as what creates meaning in one’s life, how to live from a place of connection rather than isolation as well as finding relationships and purpose in life that is fulfilling.
With the invention of new drugs and better understanding of various cancers, a lot of people are living much longer with good quality of life than our predecessors. Some treatments are also given with curative intent. Therefore it is important to understand how this diagnosis can affect you and how you can find support.
There are a lot of resources and support systems in place for those dealing with cancer.
